SALEM UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

Our hearts, our minds and our doors are always open

Mission statement of SUMC:

Leading people to an active faith in Jesus Christ

The United Methodist Church continues Christ’s ministry of preaching, teaching, healing and caring.              Thanks to the ecumenical movement we no longer emphasize our differences with other denominations.  Instead, we try to understand and celebrate the things we share and hold in common.   What’s so great about being a United Methodist?  Simply this:  It is a church that touches our hearts and stretches our minds.   It is a church that accepts us as we are and yet challenges us to be better.  And it’s a church that gathers us to worship and then sends us out to serve in the name and spirit of Jesus Christ.

If you are seeking healing, love, acceptance, forgiveness, learning, fellowship or a new perspective in life, you may find it right here at SUMC.  The church is, above all, a place to worship, and here there are opportunities available to all for Christian growth and service.

In 1961, when United Nations Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld died in a plane crash, documents found in his apartment revealed his “negotiations with myself   -  and with God.”  They were published in a book titled Markings.

One topic Hammarskjöld pondered was why his loneliness ran so deep and was so persistent.  He asked God, “Didst Thou give me this inescapable loneliness so that it would be easier for me to give Thee all?”

A hint of how Hammarskjöld  handled the situation is found in this prayer he wrote:

Give me a pure heart that I may see thee,

A humble heart that I may hear thee,

A heart of love that I may serve thee,

A heart of faith that I may abide in thee.
